The Big "O" Walkable Durban Strategy

How can we make the inner city of Durban more connected, walkable, and integrated?

2019

Services: Urban Strategy and Visioning, Research, Design

The Walkable Connected Durban strategy aims to coordinate efforts between communities and the public private sector actors to create a 13.5km ring of safe and high-quality walking, cycling and public transport routes within the Inner City.

Termed the “The Big O” the strategy is guided by walkability criteria developed considered more appropriate for the South African context.

Each chapter focusses on a precinct proposing a list of projects and interventions to create high-quality sidewalks, streets and routes for walking and cycling, increase security, improve wayfinding and connections to public transport and major amenities.
