Cape Town bridge nominated in 2 categories for “Oscars” of Footbridges

The pedestrian bridge across Buitengracht at Coen Steytler Avenue has been nominated in both the aesthetic and technical categories for short-span bridges, at the world Footbridge 2011 Awards, the “Oscars” of Pedestrian bridges. The winners are set to be announced at the Footbridge 2011 Conference in July in Wroclaw, Poland which has the theme “Attractive Structures at Reasonable Costs”.

The bridge was energized by the FIFA’s 2010 World Cup. Historically pedestrians have had to cross the highway’s five lanes through an almost continuous flow of traffic. To accommodate the increase in pedestrians during the World Cup, a bridge was required. Today the bridge is a positive legacy that has greatly improved the pedestrian linkages in the City.
