Atlantis to be positioned as the Green hub of the Cape Town City-Region

The City of Cape Town’s Property Management Department, in conjunction with Wesgro and Greencape, have recommended that consideration be given to the establishment of a Green Manufacturing Cluster in Atlantis, Cape Town.

Cape Town wants to move forward with the establishment of a process that will facilitate the location of green manufacturers while enabling rapid release of City land to manufacturers that qualify in terms of predetermined green technology criteria.

The benefits of a successful green cluster would be significant:

  • conservatively up to 2200 blue collar jobs being
  • an economic impact of around R3, 125 billion on the Western Cape

The motivation for the proposal is that an opportunity now exists to attract
investments in the manufacturing industry. This is required to supply components for
utility scale renewable energy because of the imminent approval by the National Department of Energy of power purchase agreements that will lead to the
establishment of a number of renewable energy power plants and related
manufacturing facilities in South Africa. The planned roll-out of renewable energy in South Africa will result in investments of R10-20 billon every year for the next 20 years. The manufacturing industry to support this renewable energy roll-out
will be significant.

Key investors will be deciding during September/October 2011 where to invest and it Cape Town aims to secure significant economic development and job creation.

We support this as a way to further improve the Future of Cape Town for all her fans, family and citizens.
