Architecture: CTICC announces shortlisted architects for CTICC expansion




The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) recently announced the 5 architectural teams that have been shortlisted for the design of the of the CTICC expansion. The planned expansion as announced in March of 2011, will be constructed at the existing parking lot site adjacent to the Media24 building, and across Heerengracht. The expansion is to create a “convention precinct” that is to include 10,000 square metres of retail space, a hospital, an office tower, public park and numerous basement parking bays, with a potential link to the existing Artscape Theatre and Civic Centre Station.  The existing building offers 55 000 m² of lettable space and the intention of the expansion is to increase this capacity by 49 000 m².

19 teams responded to the proposal which included the representation of four international firms. After an “extensive consultation process” five architectural teams made it through to the final selection round.

The shortlisted teams are:

Rashid Toefy, Chief Executive Officer of the CTICC said:

“The key criteria that the consortia/companies were assessed against was their level of expertise and track record, the relevant skills set that they bring to the table, their sustainability credentials and their organizational structure with regards to Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDI)”

The next phase of the competition

The 5 shortlisted finalists will be required submit a design concept and proposal, which will then be evaluated by an expert advisory panel comprised of both local and international representatives

A final announcement is expected in March 2012 subject to land deal conditions being met. The appointment of the Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers will take place following the confirmation of the official architectural design team.
