4 years after successfully hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa celebrates 20 years of its democracy, while reflecting on the impact of the event on the design of its cities. As Brazil celebrates 30 years of democracy, the challenges, solutions and opportunities of hosting mega events like the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games have been placed at the centre of global attention.
DESIGN, CITIES AND THE WORLD CUP will present a critical dialogue and discussion on the role of the World Cup and other mega events as key drivers of design and city making and ultimately in forging a greater South African society. Co-hosted by Zahira Asmal of DESIGNING_SOUTHAFRICA, and Rashiq Fataar of Future Cape Town, the forum is seen as part of an on-going discussion on the role of mega events in South African and Brazilian cities, and how they can be better used to catalyse urban solutions, be they spatial, social or infrastructure oriented.
This event is made possible with the kind support of Cape Town Tourism.

Department of Design is a public event with workshops, keynote speakers and evening activities. The programme will focus on challenges in sustainability faced by South Africans and lay the groundwork for change. Department of Design will be housed in a spectacular interior designed by Droog, creating a place for everyone to join in the conversation to #cocreateSA.
WHAT IS DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN?
Department of Design is a three-week long programme of workshops, presentations, speakers and events that seek to address sustainability challenges in South Africa. The result of these will be matchmaking and collaborations between South African and Dutch organisations in the areas of water management, transport and logistics, agriculture and farming, health and science and creative industries to co-create South Africa through design thinking and innovation.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
Department of Design will be held from 8-27 July at 8 Vrede Street in the Cape Town CBD. It will be designed as a space where visitors can engage in the programme, and interact with each other through a cafe, access to free, WiFi and workspaces, and a crèche featuring educational toys designed by our partners. The public can join the Department of Design conversation on social media with the hashtag #cocreateSA.
WHAT WILL THE PROGRAMME FEATURE?
The Department of Design programme is currently in development. The Dutch Consulate General is engaging in Round Table discussions with South African and Dutch experts to co-create a programme that addresses the most relevant issues facing South Africans where Dutch expertise can be shared. You can follow programme developments right now on our website www.departmentofdesign.nl
WHY IS THE NETHERLANDS INVESTING IN WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL 2014?
World Design Capital 2014 addresses sustainability issues through a creative lens. This speaks directly to the Consulate General as an opportunity for the Netherlands to make a lasting contribution to South Africa using Dutch strengths in design thinking and innovation. As part of the WDC2014 platform, Department of Design enables Dutch and South African experts to co-create SA through meaningful and lasting partnerships.
WHAT IS #COCREATESA
Department of Design is a platform of exchange where, through the perspective of design as an agent of change, a groundwork can be laid for long-term solutions. The message of Department of Design is that through cooperation and collaboration towards these solutions, we can #cocreateSA.
WHO IS FUNDING DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN?
Department of Design is funded by the Government of the Netherlands. The Netherlands is South Africa’s third largest EU-trading partner. IT is also the largest importer of goods from the Western Cape and the second largest investor in that area after the UK.
