Much ado about Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre?

by André-Pierre du Plessis

It’s been criticized for looking like anything nasty – from a lopsided bedpan to a potty training seat and similar to the criticism leveled against the Cape Town Stadium during its construction, New York’s Barclay Center is taking the punches from nearly every Brooklynite.

Except for perhaps one of it’s most famous: Jay-Z. Designed by Frank Gehry SHoP Architects, the multi-purpose indoor arena opened its doors to the public on Friday when one of the stakeholders, Jay-Z himself, had his first of an eight-day sold-out concert series (perhaps only because he insisted that tickets be priced at $29.50

Much of the noise against its construction sounds like that leveled against Cape Town Stadium although the Barclays Center has become the new home of a major-league sports team, unlike our yet-to-be-determined home of Western Province Rugby

Be your own judge at how successful Brooklynites have been in their protest against the building and perhaps find some pointers for future protests against new Cape Town developments at www.battleforbrooklyn.com and http://www.dddb.net/ Also see whether New York Magazine is biased in their reporting against the development with their initial acceptance of defeat and their grim outlook for the future featured in their most recent issue baring the headline “Brooklyn is Finished

ahem, it was not designed by Gehry buddy, Gehry was fired off the job for being too expensive- it was Shop architects who designed this arena, and the rest of the Atlantic Yards

My bad. I had some totally outdated information at hand. Thanks for pointing this out.
