Ekumenopolis: A film on urban development in Istanbul

If you’re following the current protests around Gezi Park, a 9-acre urban green space in the city center scheduled to be replaced by a shopping mall in Istanbul, it is clear that there has been fomenting dissent around the use of public space and the development policies and priorities forwarded by Turkey’s government. The 2011 documentary film Ek├╝menopolis, by Imre Azem, provides further context to the ongoing protest and presents a fascinating look at the scale of urban development over the last decade and some of the resulting effects from the rapid push towards “modernization” and urban renewal.
