4 years after successfully hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa celebrates 20 years of its democracy, while reflecting on the impact of the event on the design of its cities. As Brazil celebrates 30 years of democracy, the challenges, solutions and opportunities of hosting mega events like the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Gameshave been placed at the centre of global attention.
DESIGN, CITIES AND THE WORLD CUP will present a critical dialogue and discussion on the role of the World Cup and other mega events as key drivers of design and city making and ultimately in forging a greater South African society. Co-hosted by Zahira Asmal of DESIGNING_SOUTHAFRICA, and Rashiq Fataar of Future Cape Town, the forum is seen as part of an on-going discussion on the role of mega events in South African and Brazilian cities, and how they can be better used to catalyse urban solutions, be they spatial, social or infrastructure oriented.
This event is made possible with the kind support of Cape Town Tourism.
Copies of the book Reflections & Opportunities: Design, Cities & the World Cup, edited by Zahira Asmal, and as featured at Wallpaper Magazine will be on sale at the event, for a discounted price of R150 (cash only).
