Voices of the City is a weekly feature that spotlights the everyday lives of our citizens, living and working in the city. By asking the same five questions to all our interviewees, we discover not only how our experiences of the city differ, but also what we share. It is a daunting task to try and capture the diverse experiences of our city’s inhabitants, but we feel that it is a worthy, and necessary, endeavor, in order to better understand the present and future of our city.

This week we meet Cape Town photographer Katinka Bester whose intimate photographic journey takes us all on a quest for moody landscapes and uniquely beautiful faces. Her repertoire includes personal shots of places she’s visited, often captured on film, as well as fashion shots for the likes of Dior and Lacoste.

What about Cape Town inspires you the most?

Cape Town is such a progressive place to be creative: new adventures are constantly unfolding and changing the face of the city. It’s densely beautiful and the diversity of landscapes are a big inspiration to me. It’s always the place I want to come back to. Its home and it honestly is the place that makes me feel like my dreams can come true.

Do you have a secret space or place that you enjoy in the city?

I do yes, it’s fantastic 🙂

What was the last exciting event you attended in the city?

That would have to be the ‘Jungle’ concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens, it was brilliant. It started raining just before they started playing. Nobody left and we all had immense amounts of fun. Capetonians are so easy going and always up for a good time, regardless of the elements.

What frustrates you about the city?

I think we all know that, generally speaking, we’re bad with sticking to a plan. Myself included 🙂

You can have dinner with one person living or dead. Who is it and why?

William Blake. He saw the world freely, with infinite imagination. You get the feeling that he understood what this whole life thing means. I’m sure he’d be great to share a bottle of wine with, and I’d love to see what he’d do with a camera.
